To write a book????

I want to write a book that inspires while making people laugh.  My fiance just deployed and one of my friends said I had to read the book “Confessions of a Military Wife” by Mollie Gross.  Now I am only part of the way through the book but I am in LOVE!!! I can completely relate to the author in some very creepy ways; not only because of having some similar experiences but also we fell in love with our Marine for the same reasons.  So of course, immediately I am comfortable and interested in reading about what she has to say, because I want to know what I have to look forward to!  The best part of this book is that she makes everything so funny and the same things that she finds funny are the same things I giggle about, which make them hysterical!!!

So I guess in order to write a book that will inspire along with making people laugh, I need to make a book that will inspire me and make me laugh.  Now, what to write about????  I can’t do the military thing because I barely understand it myself, in fact I call myself a military illiterate!  Maybe I can write a book about trying to survive ……..  Well I guess you’ll have to wait and find out what I survive!!!  And hey if I don’t then maybe it can be a book about how not to survive!!  Wish me luck!!

What a character . . .

If you could be a character in book what kind of character would you be??  Would you be the hero, the wimp, the women, the child, the nerd, the hottie, the victim??  I think that when you write about a character in a book you take pieces of who you are or who you wish to be and incorporate them into that character.

If I were to be character in a book I would want to be a strong, confidant female that is smart and knows what she wants in life.  I wouldn’t mind a little sex appeal because I just think that’s something I don’t have.   I would want to discover something (not like a treasure, but maybe just something about myself), I would want to make a difference in someone’s life.

I know that’s a lot for one book, but no one says that a character has to be limited to one book.  I mean think about life, you can think about it in terms of chapters in a book or even in different books.  I just graduated college and I consider each year that I devoted to school as a different chapter and I have finished the book on that part of my life.  I am currently starting a new book.

Ok so now that I know what kind of character I want to be in a book, what kind of book do I want to be in??  Not a horror or thriller that is for sure.  I think I would like to be in a mystery or feel good book with a little romance mixed in there.  Everybody’s got to fall in love!!!  There most definitely has to be humor in the book because what am I without laughter.  I know what I want now I just need to write it!!

If you could be a character in your own book what would you be like and what kind of book would it be???

The Bad Side to Romance Novels

I know that I haven’t posted anything recently but that is all because I have been trying to make it through this semester in school.  I am almost done 2 more exams and then I have one more semster before graduation!  Woo Hoo!!  Even with all that going on I have still found the time to read a few books.  I found this series written by an author that I have read before.  Her other books were great so I had no reason to bought that these wouldn’t be good too.  But WOW!  This book was not a romance novel it was a sex book.  In every chapter there was sex and once you to got to the end there was still more sex.  I know that I like romance novels but there still needs to be a story there.  Not just two people meet and then there is sex going on.  I skipped reading half the book because I was just trying to find the story in the book.  If I could I’d like to get my money back.  Anyone can write a steamy sex scene but it takes an author to write a romance novel.  There has to be a memorable meeting and a building attraction to one another, there should be a fight for affections.  That’s what makes a good romance.

I like mine to have a murder mystery vibe to them too.  Rachel Gibson wrote a great short series which was about 4 authors that were friends and each book goes into one of their lives.  The best part is that each book is written in the style of that particular author, a True Crime, Murder Mystery, Romance and Science Fiction.  These are great books! At least in my opinion.  That is the beauty of reading though, what I like others might not.

However if there is no story to follow then you might as well just call the book porn.  It’s books like that, that give Romance Novels a bad name.  That is what most people already think about Romance Novels, so books like that are just perpetuating the cycle.  Come on authors do you really think that is a good book?  Having read other stories that are soo much better than this book to me it just seems like laziness on the authors part. I need a book with more substance than just sex.  Books like this are the bad side to Romance Novels.

A very sensitive subject…

SO I want to write about a very sensitive topic, but before I say anything I want to preface with the following.  Everyone is allowed their own opinion and views.  I am by no means trying to press my opinion on anyone else.  In fact I encourage everyone to figure out your own beliefs and be proud of what you believe.angelsanddemons

Religion is one of the most sensitive subjects there is.  I have studied religions in college and listened to people talk about their own beliefs.  For all of my experiences I have come to have strong beliefs in my religion.  However, I am always open to new interpretations and new ideas.  I think that is very important for everyone.  You should always want to learn and grow, there is never a limit to the amount of knowledge that one can obtain.  Religion is one of those same things that you can never have enough new knowledge on.

With the new Dan Brown book coming out, I started thinking about all the religious controversy that surrounded his last two Robert Langdon books.  In some ways I can see how Catholics may not enjoy the subject matter that he chose to write about (The Catholic Church), when I read his books they only strength the faith in my beliefs.  “Science and Religion support the same thing – pure energy is the father of creation.” – Dan Brown, Davinci codeAngels & Demons

My boyfriend, who is Catholic, refuses to read the books just on principle.  I tend not to talk about this with him because he is so strong in his beliefs.  But I did ask him, “Would it really hurt you to read what someone else writes about your religion, especially if you are so strong in your beliefs?”  He refused to answer and walked away, so I dropped the subject.  I believe that many people that are upset by his books feel the same way that my boyfriend does, but have they ever read the books? There are many things that I very much admire about Catholicism, but I do try to keep my mind and heart open to other ideas.  “Some of us pray to Jesus, some of us go to Mecca, some of us study subatomic particles. In the end we are all just searching for truth, that which is greater than ourselves.” – Dan Brown, Angels & Demons

I preordered my copy of The Lost Symbol and it’s here!  I know I can’t open and read it yet because onlost symbolce I do I won’t be able to put it down and currently I have too much on my plate to stop and read. (And those of you who have read my previous stuff know I LOVE TO READ.)  I cannot wait to be taken into a new world and open my mind up to new and exciting ideas.  I hope that you will too!! “Science tells me God must exist. My mind tells me I will never understand God. And my heart tells me I am not meant to.” – Dan Brown, Angels & Demons

If you can be a sex-addict why can’t you be a book-addict?

I learned something about myself today.  I thought it was pretty interesting.  I have been going through somethings in the last couple days and I needed to escape.  So what did I do, I picked up a book to read and a world to escape into.  I love reading! I can’t help it and I wonder if people have the same thoughts.  I actually think that it is an addiction.  If you can be a sex-addict why can’t you be a book-addict?

I constantly find myself escaping from my world to get into a good book.  Whenever I am lonely I find company in the characters I read about.  Whenever I am bored there is always something interesting to find in a book.  And whenever I need a good cry I can just pick up a book and cry it out along with the other characters.  I’m not crazy I swear, but this is the passion I that I have for books.  I get so tired of people saying that they’d rather watch a movie because it takes less time.  Puleease!!!  You are just too lazy to use your own imagination that is needed when reading a book.

This is why I want to write! I want to be able to allow some one to escape for just a little while.  I want some one to read my books and feel the same way I feel about the books I read.  I can’t guarantee that I’ll be a great writer but I will try my best.  I have to try and see what I can do.  I think that my passion for reading comes from the fact that I almost couldn’t read! Reading changed my life. Through wonderfully observant parents and teachers, I was identified as having dyslexia. I was tested for it and received help from the school system to get treated. I could not read until the second grade. I spent a summer going to Furman University, having a private tutor, and getting tutored in school. There were many privileges because of my dyslexia; longer time on tests, a person how would fill in my answer sheet for me so I didn’t put the wrong thing, and many other privileges. You are never fully cured from dyslexia; it stays with you all your life. I still catch myself reading the numbers backwards or writing down the wrong letters, I always have a little anxiety about reading aloud in class, because it is so hard for me. Since I learned to read you almost never find me without a book I am currently reading. So now you can understand why I think reading is so special.

When people ask me if I have ever read a book that changed my life I simply say yes. I have read so many that have changed my life it would take all day to explain which ones and why. The important part in reading is finding a book that you enjoy. Mystery, Horror, Drama, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Historical, Romance; as long as you enjoy reading it, it really doesn’t matter what it’s about. Reading can teach you new words, new cultures, new ideas and new things you never knew about yourself.

I love to inspire people to read, because it is so important to me. Whenever I can, I try and get a new person into a good book. A good book, if written well can help you explore your own emotions. A good book can make you laugh (go ahead and laugh out loud its ok) one chapter and tear up the next. A good book can help to develop your imagination; you can picture exactly what is happening in the book. I know that when I have a good book nothing can stop me from reading it, I am right in there beside the main character. A good book will change your life, even if it’s a small change.

* This is one of those tangents that I was talking about!!!

What Can I Say I am a BOOK WORM!!!

Ok so I definitely learned something yesterday.  Write about sex and anyone will read what you have to say.  So many people read my posting but how many read it because of what it said and how many it read because of the title, tags or the fact that it had sex in it.  I’m just curious because it makes me wonder. How do I follow that up?

But not just this one, anything.  How do authors come up with the next book in a series? How do they keep writing stories that make you want to keep picking up the books?  Some of the authors, that I enjoy,  write in the same series but instead of writing the same character they write from different character’s prospective.  In some ways I reKatie MacAlisterally like that, you never get tired of reading how the same person gets stuck in the same situation.  But in other ways I really want to know what’s going on with the original character.

Katie MacAlister as done something interesting, she has written about a “world*” and writes four books following this character through it.  Then she has switched and is writing about another character going through this same “world*”, while still interacting some with the previous character so that you know a little bit about what’s going on with the first character she wrote about.

I love series books because I get so involved in the characters that I that I get really into the world around them and through a series I get to see more and more into that world.  What can I say I am a BOOK WORM!!!!

* = I say world because I don’t know how better to phrase it.

Statement 2

I thought that maybe I should clear up a what I want this blog to be about.  I have hopes in someday writing a book.  However I don’t know where to begin or really what I want to write about.  SO I am using this blog as a way to bounce ideas around and get a little feed back.  I call this blog the Journal of the Nonsensical because half the time I end up going off on a tangent and then it all just makes Nonsense.  So from this statement I hope you understand that I am hoping to get comments, I really do want to hear what you have to say.  And maybe you can help me figure out where to go.  When I get more comfortable I hope to post some of the little snippets of my writing to see how it is.  But do expect Tangents because half the time I just make a whole lot of nonsense!!

Murder She Wrote

As I mentioned in my previous post I someday want to be a writer.  My problem is, is that I have all these great ideas but once I have them I don’t know where to go with them.  I love murder mysteries with a little bit of romance involved, but the problem is I want it to be different and new.  Honestly how many times can you write a story where someone gets killed and an uninvolved party solves the case?  That was always my problem with Murder She Wrote (my mom loves that show), that poor woman couldn’t even go visit a family member without someone dropping dead.  And evenmurdershewrote when the police are trying to solve it, she just happens to see something or hear something that helps her solve the case.  I mean seriously there comes a time when I just wouldn’t leave my house anymore because of all the death around me!!

So my basic problem I love murder mysteries but it has to be something new and different that people are willing to pick up and read.  I love books!!! What attracts me to a book is the Title, sadly I pick my beer and wine the same way.  It can lead to some pretty sticky situations.  Janet Evanovich, who is one of my all time favorite authors!, doesn’t seem to have this problem.  In fact, she has written a 15 book murder mystery series that I can’t wait to pick up.  It’s never the same story and it’s always an interesting title.  I have read every single book that she has ever written!! How she comesone_money up with her stuff I will never know, but I hope that I can figure it out.  She always makes you laugh out loud whenever reading her books (which I should advise that you should be careful when reading her books in public because of the side effect of random out bursts of laughter.) I think that laughter is an important element in the writing but you can’t try to be funny or it ends up coming across as fake, it should be natural and just flow from you.  I think that I am a pretty funny person but having it come across in my writing is difficult.  I’m working on my writing and I think I will post some sample of my writing to hopefully get some feedback.  If you looking for a great read One for the Money by Janet Evanovich is a good one!!
