Who knew!

So I was packing up my bookcases because I will be moving soon, and I started looking through all the different books that I have.  Most of them romances (I know shocker!!) and I realized how many different kinds of romances there actually are.  I have some that are the, I guess traditional romances; you know the ones you picture with Fabio on the cover; though I really don’t have a lot of those (I’m really not one for the damsel in distress kind of book). Then I have some that have a bit of Sci-Fi to them, you know dragons, supernatural powers and vampires.  Then I have my favorite which a comical and have a bit of mystery in them.  Those make up the majority of my collecting.  While I was packing them  up (all 3 huge boxes worth, I feel sorry for the person that will be lifting those boxes) I realized that I have books to fit my every mood.  I can go to my book cases and immediately pick out the book that will best suit the mood that I am in.  I have my own mini bookstore!!  Which I love because I change moods on a daily bases (this can also be a problem when it’s the end of the week and time to clean up cause I find 5 books scattered throughout the house)!!  My mom always says that I should just go to the library to get the books because I read them so quickly and then buy some more that I am just wasting my money but honestly I love my books.  I love to come home from a long day go to my bookcase and pick any book off the self and dive into a new story.  I may already know the story but it is still a great story and oh so perfect for the mood that I am in.  If I’m feeling a little lonely I’ll pick out a book that will either make me laugh out loud (because who cares I’m alone!!) or a book that will make me feel comforted.  If I’m feeling a little vengeful (rarely happens I swear!) I’ll get a book with a lot of mystery where the female leads gets the bad guy in the end!!  I am telling you I never realized how perfect it was to have so many different types of romance novels.  They each have a different flavor to them but in the end they all have some romance too, (because of course every book needs a little romance)!

The Bad Side to Romance Novels

I know that I haven’t posted anything recently but that is all because I have been trying to make it through this semester in school.  I am almost done 2 more exams and then I have one more semster before graduation!  Woo Hoo!!  Even with all that going on I have still found the time to read a few books.  I found this series written by an author that I have read before.  Her other books were great so I had no reason to bought that these wouldn’t be good too.  But WOW!  This book was not a romance novel it was a sex book.  In every chapter there was sex and once you to got to the end there was still more sex.  I know that I like romance novels but there still needs to be a story there.  Not just two people meet and then there is sex going on.  I skipped reading half the book because I was just trying to find the story in the book.  If I could I’d like to get my money back.  Anyone can write a steamy sex scene but it takes an author to write a romance novel.  There has to be a memorable meeting and a building attraction to one another, there should be a fight for affections.  That’s what makes a good romance.

I like mine to have a murder mystery vibe to them too.  Rachel Gibson wrote a great short series which was about 4 authors that were friends and each book goes into one of their lives.  The best part is that each book is written in the style of that particular author, a True Crime, Murder Mystery, Romance and Science Fiction.  These are great books! At least in my opinion.  That is the beauty of reading though, what I like others might not.

However if there is no story to follow then you might as well just call the book porn.  It’s books like that, that give Romance Novels a bad name.  That is what most people already think about Romance Novels, so books like that are just perpetuating the cycle.  Come on authors do you really think that is a good book?  Having read other stories that are soo much better than this book to me it just seems like laziness on the authors part. I need a book with more substance than just sex.  Books like this are the bad side to Romance Novels.

What Can I Say I am a BOOK WORM!!!

Ok so I definitely learned something yesterday.  Write about sex and anyone will read what you have to say.  So many people read my posting but how many read it because of what it said and how many it read because of the title, tags or the fact that it had sex in it.  I’m just curious because it makes me wonder. How do I follow that up?

But not just this one, anything.  How do authors come up with the next book in a series? How do they keep writing stories that make you want to keep picking up the books?  Some of the authors, that I enjoy,  write in the same series but instead of writing the same character they write from different character’s prospective.  In some ways I reKatie MacAlisterally like that, you never get tired of reading how the same person gets stuck in the same situation.  But in other ways I really want to know what’s going on with the original character.

Katie MacAlister as done something interesting, she has written about a “world*” and writes four books following this character through it.  Then she has switched and is writing about another character going through this same “world*”, while still interacting some with the previous character so that you know a little bit about what’s going on with the first character she wrote about.

I love series books because I get so involved in the characters that I that I get really into the world around them and through a series I get to see more and more into that world.  What can I say I am a BOOK WORM!!!!

* = I say world because I don’t know how better to phrase it.
